Abstract

This study attempts to evaluate the challenges facing Nigerian security and the capacity of Nigerian law enforcement agencies, as the nation faces escalating violent crimes and insurgency, and seeks to proffer viable solutions. Following in-depth observations and examination of security agencies and their operational methods, significant lapses were identified that have rendered security efforts largely ineffective in addressing the prevailing situation. The research commenced by comparing and contrasting Nigeria’s current security state with that of selected developed countries. The situation was further analyzed using primary data collected through a quantitative research method employing a survey design drawn from a population of selected individuals knowledgeable about the subject matter. The study discovered that the inadequate application of technology and forensic science in combating violent crimes and insurgency has contributed significantly to the persistent security challenges in Nigeria. Consequently, the study advocates for the integration of advanced technology and forensic science in crime and insurgency control. It further recommends that the federal government prioritize the training of forensic experts, as the current security climate necessitates improved capacity in crime detection and insurgency eradication. The situation demands enhanced technological skills and well-equipped forensic surveillance centers capable of effectively tracking criminals wherever they may be, thereby improving public safety in Nigeria.
